Cops: Driver, 88, hit pedestrian, breaks both legs

An 88-year-old motorist lost control of his car in a Plainview supermarket parking lot Wednesday, went over the cement stopper, through a steel guard rail and struck a 61-year-old pedestrian, police said.

The pedestrian was transported to Nassau University Medical Center by helicopter for treatment of two broken legs, and multiple contusions and lacerations, Nassau police said.

The driver was not charged, as there was no apparent criminality in connection with the accident, police said. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said, and his vehicle was impounded for brake and safety inspections.

The accident happened at 3:30 p.m. as the unidentified motorist was pulling his 2000 Mercury into a parking spot at the Shoprite supermarket at 1026 Old Country Rd., police said.
