A 28-year-old man was fatally shot in Long Beach early Saturday, police said.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired at 5 Birch Court at 12:55 a.m. found a wounded man, who was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Although police have not released the man's name, relatives and friends said he is Tyrenzo Brown.

Outside of the apartment where police said the shooting happened, a small memorial was set up for Brown, known as "Fly Ty."

Since January, several shootings have occurred around the housing complex, which is next door to a police station.

William Fuller, a member of the community and friend of the Brown family, said he arrived home from a church event around 1 a.m. Saturday to find several police cars and an ambulance parked by the complex.

"This place used to be a nice place to live, but it's not any longer, because of people who don't have the same mindset: family, employment, community, church, good will," Fuller said.

"It had been quiet the past few months," he said. "We were hoping for the best, but to come home last night and to find this -- It's just seriously disappointing."

The Nassau County Police Department's homicide squad is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-244-TIPS.
