Cops: Felony DWI charge for parkway driver

A Nyack woman faces a felony drunken driving charge after being stopped Saturday on the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead, State Police said.

Joyce Doyle, 43, of 170 Jayne Ave., was driving a green BMW in an unsafe and erratic manner in the east lanes of the parkway near Exit 21, Nassau Road, police said.

Twice troopers observed Doyle drive onto the left shoulder and then twice enter the center lane unsafely without using her turn signal, according to a Monday news release.

When troopers first tried to stop her, the release said, "the vehicle was slow to respond" and troopers used lights, sirens and the patrol car's public address system to instruct the operator to pull over.

Troopers noticed a strong odor of alcohol while interviewing Doyle, and she registered .12 percent on a breath-analyzer test, the release said.

She was arrested and found to have a previous DWI conviction, in 2009. Because of the previous conviction, her charge of driving while intoxicated is a felony, police said.

Arraignment information was not immediately available.
