A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized after suffering cardiac arrest when her father crashed their car into a tree in Lynbrook, village police said Tuesday.
The crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when the southbound sedan veered into a tree on Ocean Avenue near Ruth Place, Village Police Chief Joseph Neve said.
The girl, who was seated in the vehicle in a child-safety seat, was rushed to a hospital, where she was breathing on her own but was still unconscious as of late Tuesday, he said.
Another passenger in the car, a 3-year-old boy, and the driver were not seriously injured, Neve said. It was not immediately clear whether the boy was also the child of the driver. Police did not identify the family.
The chief credited a nurse driving nearby with springing into action and beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
"Luckily there was a nurse in the car behind them and saw it happen and administered CPR immediately," Neve said, adding, "We get there pretty quick but the faster you get the oxygen, the better you are - especially if you're in cardiac arrest."
The cause of the crash was being investigated Tuesday but there appears to be no criminality, he said.
