Cops: Gunman thwarted in attempt to rob man outside bank

Police are searching for a gunman who approached a man making a cash deposit for his place of employment Monday afternoon in North Massapequa, only to be scared off when the victim triggered the panic alarm in his vehicle.

The incident occurred outside the Chase Bank on Hicksville Road at about 2:45 p.m.

Nassau County police said the victim, identified only as a 46-year-old man, had exited his vehicle and was headed into the bank to make the cash deposit when he said he was approached by a man with a handgun -- and went back to his car, triggering the alarm.

The gunman then fled the scene on foot, police said.

Police said the gunman wore a black ski mask, white shirt, black pants and a black baseball cap with a straight brim.

He had a black handgun.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
