A Lakeview man who set his girlfriend's clothes on fire, causing damage to a Hempstead home was arrested Friday, police said.

Nassau police said Ramell Cooper, 32, was at a residence on Stowe Place when he took his girlfriend's clothes outside, poured gasoline on them and lit the clothing on fire at 2:30 p.m. The home also sustained fire and heat damage, police said.

Hempstead firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze. Authorities said two females and a 5-year-old child were at the home, but no injuries were reported.

When officers arrived, they found Cooper inside the home hiding under the oil tank in the boiler room.

He was arrested on charges of first-degree reckless endangerment, and fourth- and fifth-degree arson. Police also said Cooper had a family court warrant.

He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
