Cops: Mom, daughters hit by car in Freeport

A car hit a mother and her two daughters in Freeport on Thursday evening -- injuring all three, the mother seriously, police said.

Nassau County police said the accident occurred at the intersection of North Main Street and Lena Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. The woman, identified only as 39 years old, and her daughters, ages 13 and 8, were crossing Lena from north to south when they were struck by a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by a 27-year-old from Roosevelt, police said.

The Maxima, which was northbound on Main, was unable to stop in time, police said. Police said the woman suffered a head injury, while the 13-year-old suffered a non-life-threatening back injury and the 8-year-old suffered a possible broken leg. All three were hospitalized. Police said the mother was in serious but stable condition.

The driver was uninjured.

Police said a safety check was performed on the car, which was released to the driver -- who was not cited.
