Cops seek vehicle that fled fatal hit-run of pedestrian in Hempstead

Nassau County police are looking for a second car in a hit-and-run accident Monday that killed a pedestrian in Hempstead.

Police said John Santopolo, 65, of Hewlett was struck by a 2011 Honda Crossover as he crossed Peninsula Boulevard and South Franklin Avenue at about 6:20 p.m.

The Honda was driving east when it hit Santopolo, knocking him into the roadway, where he was hit by a second vehicle, police said.

The second vehicle left the scene, police said.

North Shore Ambulance took Santopolo to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 7:10 p.m. Police said he sustained head and internal injuries.

The driver of the Honda, complaining of pain, also was taken to a hospital. Police in a news release did not specify the nature of the driver's injuries.

The driver of the Honda did submit to a breath-analyzer test at the scene, which was negative for alcohol, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety tests.

Police said no description of the second vehicle is available. They ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All information will be kept confidential.
