Cops: Shot man linked to Hempstead robbery

An armed 26-year-old Freeport man who was shot in the elbow while resisting arrest during a scuffle that injured six Nassau County police officers Sunday was later connected to an earlier street robbery in Hempstead, police said.

Kelly Baldwin of 109 East Seaman Ave. was shot during a confrontation with police on West Raymond Avenue in Roosevelt. Police said the officers had responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun on Nassau Road at 4:47 a.m.

The officers told Baldwin to drop his handgun, police said, but he did not comply. One officer fired his gun at Baldwin when he turned suddenly toward the officers, police said.

The gunshot struck Baldwin in the elbow, police said.

He continued to resist arrest, struggling with several officers, but was eventually taken into custody, police said.

Six officers were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries, police said.

Nassau police did not immediately provide the names or conditions of the police officers, but later added that one suffered a leg injury, another suffered an undisclosed type of sprain and the remaining four were hospitalized as a precaution from being involved in the scuffle that ended in gunfire.

Baldwin was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for the injury to his elbow, police said. He was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

After an investigation Baldwin also was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree criminal use of a firearm and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for a street robbery police said he and two others committed earlier Sunday in Hempstead.

Police said Baldwin, Marcus Wheeler, 23, of 201 West Fulton St. in Roosevelt, and Destiny Leonard, 24, of 91 South Franklin St. in Hempstead, approached a 23-year-old man and another person outside a Chase bank ATM on North Franklin Street at 1:33 a.m. Police said Baldwin pointed a gun at the back of the victim's head -- and demanded cash -- as his two accomplices blocked the sidewalk.

The 23-year-old victim gave Baldwin $20, police said.

Baldwin then took a wallet and removed another $60, police said. The trio then fled.

Police said Wheeler and Leonard were each charged with second-degree robbery and were arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Baldwin will be arraigned as soon as it is "medically practical," police said.
