A Roosevelt man and woman face rape, kidnapping and attempted murder charges in the beating and sexual assault of a woman who was bound and dumped in the woods with a plastic bag over her head, Nassau police said Wednesday.
Kenneth Bass, 53, and Julia Lopez, 37, both of 46 Prospect St., were arrested Tuesday in the May 5 attack on a 46-year-old woman, police said. A third suspect is being sought, and the victim was still in the hospital Wednesday, police said.
Special Victims Squad detectives said the woman was at a Brookside Drive home when the three accused her of owing them money. After telling them she had no money, she was severely beaten, forced to perform a sex act and had her handbag and cellphone stolen, police said.
The suspects placed a plastic bag around the victim's head, tied her hands and feet and left her in woods behind Henry Street, police said. She freed herself and screamed for help.
The two arrested suspects are charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, first-degree rape, criminal sexual act, assault and criminal possession of a controlled substance. They were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said Bass and Lopez are in a relationship and did not know the victim, who had come to the house accompanied by a man who then left.
Detectives ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
