A 29-year-old New Jersey woman has been charged in a string of thefts in Nassau County after she and her boyfriend were arrested Wednesday by U.S. marshals in Manhattan in connection with a New Jersey police investigation.

Cathleen Toomey, of 233 Essex St., Gloucester City, N.J., faces charges of second-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief and three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, Nassau County police said. Police said her boyfriend, arrested on unrelated charges from New Jersey, is expected to be charged in one of the thefts, and said another person, yet to be arrested, is being sought in connection with a theft in East Meadow.

The crime spree took place at sites in Farmingdale, North New Hyde Park, Levittown and East Meadow, police said. Police said marshals had been tracking the boyfriend, identified as Nicholas Montorano, and arrested him and Toomey, only to have Toomey admit to the thefts.

Police said that on Oct. 5, Toomey and a person "yet to be arrested" forced open the rear door of a home on Nelson Street in Farmingdale, and stole a 52-inch television, a laptop computer, an iPod, a camera and jewelry. Police said that the homeowner, returning home, spotted Toomey and the other suspect driving from the scene and called 911.

A day later, police said, Toomey and Montorano broke into a vehicle in the parking lot at LA Fitness on Marcus Avenue in North New Hyde Park, stealing a pocketbook and a black tote bag. On Oct. 8, at about 6:30 p.m., police said Toomey and another person yet to be arrested broke into a vehicle at Planet Fitness on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, stealing a pocketbook, then at 7:30 p.m. broke into a vehicle at New York Sports Club on Merrick Avenue, East Meadow, stealing a pocketbook.

Montorano is being held by authorities for processing on the New Jersey charges, police said. Police said Toomey was taken into custody by Second Precinct detectives. She was arraigned Thursday and is being held on a bail of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
