Two Nassau County men who punched a cabdriver and took his cellphone in a dispute about their fare face robbery charges, police said Monday.
Darwin Barrera, 24, of 25 Winsome Lane, Rockville Centre, and Jairon Jacinto Barrientos, 32, of 287 W. Merrick Rd., Freeport, are charged with second-degree robbery, Nassau County police said.
Barrera was remanded on a bail of $5,000 cash, $2,500 bond at his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
Arraignment information on Barrientos was not immediately available.
Police said the two were passengers in a Latino Taxi when they argued with the driver, a man, 32, over fare charges at Guy Lombardo Avenue and Smith Street in Freeport on Sunday at about 4:10 a.m.
The driver called Freeport police on his cellphone, and Barrera took the driver's phone and the two began punching him, police said. The two then ran off.
Freeport police later found both men and recovered the victim's cellphone.
The driver was taken to a hospital and treated, but police did not provide details on the nature of his injuries.
