A Valley Stream certified public accountant forged paperwork to give himself power of attorney over a woman's personal finances, but when the Internal Revenue Service notified her of the financial documents, she called police and the CPA was arrested.
The accountant, Art Trachtenberg, 59, who operates his CPA business from his 23 Forest Rd. home in Valley Stream, was charged with forgery, identity theft and filing a false instrument.
He forged the Elmont woman's signature on the power of attorney documents in September, Fifth Squad detectives said. He was arrested shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday.
A Nassau County Police Department news release did not say that Trachtenberg was a CPA, but the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions has a CPA named Arthur B. Trachtenberg listed at the same address as that of the forgery suspect.
State records show that Arthur B. Trachtenberg has been a certified public accountant since 1986, his license is current, he is registered through May 2012, and he is not on a list of "licensees subject to disciplinary action by the Board of Regents."
Trachtenberg faces arraignment Friday at First District Court, Hempstead.
