A Hempstead woman has been arrested after leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident early Monday, police said.
Gregoria Canales-Bonilla, 32, was arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with death, police said. She was held on a $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. She was represented by Legal Aid.
Canales-Bonilla, of 485 Front St., was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer north on Greenwich Street at 4:40 a.m. Monday when she crossed over the double yellow line near Harold Avenue, striking a 2008 Ford that was traveling south, Nassau County police said.
Police said Canales-Bonilla then fled on foot, leaving her vehicle at the scene. A 24-year-old male passenger in the rear of the 2008 Ford sustained fatal injuries in the accident, police said.
Police did not have information on the condition of the driver of the 2008 Ford.
Homicide detectives arrested Canales-Bonilla at her home without incident at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday.
