Cops: Woman's rental car used in bank heist

A Central Islip woman whose rented car was used in a January bank robbery has been arrested on charges she misled detectives investigating the heist, Nassau County police said Thursday.

Arlene Abreu, 34, of 34 E. Sycamore St., rented a blue Chevrolet Cruz from a Patchogue Hertz facility on Jan. 13, police said, and the car was used in the robbery of a TD Bank in East Meadow on Jan. 27.

Detectives working on the case said Abreu "deliberately misled the investigators about who was in possession of the vehicle" when the robbery was committed, police said.

Abreu was arrested at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday at her home on charges of hindering prosecution and criminal facilitation, police said.

She is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.

A police spokesman Thursday said he was not sure if an arrest had been made in the bank robbery.
