Massapequa man charged in Bethpage fatal crash, Nassau police say

A Massapequa man was intoxicated behind the wheel of an SUV in Bethpage Tuesday morning when the vehicle crossed over a median and struck an oncoming Nissan, killing the driver, Nassau police said.

John Cappello, 30, was arrested and charged following an investigation into the 10:35 a.m. crash on Stewart Avenue near Linden Avenue, police said in a statement Tuesday night.

The driver of a 2019 Nissan Rogue was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. The name of the victim, identified by police as a woman, 74, was not released.

Cappello faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree assault and driving while intoxicated, police said.

Cappello was drivng southbound on Stewart Avenue in a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero when the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the victim's northbound SUV, police said.

Cappello was hospitalized and treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening, police said.

He will be arraigned when "medically practical," police said.
