A Massapequa woman has been charged with stealing more than $50,000 from the car dealership where she worked, Nassau police said.

Police said Crystal Smalls, 39, was working as the controller -- a position in which she was responsible for making deposits -- at Auto World Kia at 2520 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow when she stole cash from the company. Police said between June 2013 and July 2014, Smalls would remove cash from deposits and alter deposit slips to only reflect the deposit of checks. She was arrested Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. without incident, police said.

The investigation was conducted by Nassau Crimes Against Property detectives, who worked with the Economic Crimes Bureau of the Nassau District Attorney's office, police said.

Smalls, of 31 Joan Lane, is charged with second-degree grand larceny and two counts of first-degree falsifying business records. She was arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead. Arraignment information was not available Tuesday night.
