A speeding car ran a stop sign and crashed into a house in Garden City Park early Thursday morning, killing the male driver, police said.

The identity of the driver has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Nassau County police said two passengers in the car were taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola in critical condition. Two residents of the home, a 48-year-old man and his 72-year-old mother, were not injured.

Police said the crash occurred at 2:18 a.m. at Broadway and 5th Avenue. The home is on 5th Avenue, police said.

Police said the car, a 1997 Infinity, was traveling westbound on Broadway at "a high rate of speed" when it ran the stop sign and crashed into the side of the house. The front of the vehicle landed in the basement with the rear of the car hanging out of the home "teetering" - the vehicle threatening to fall into the basement, police said.

The Nassau police Emergency Services Unit responded to the scene, as did fire departments from Garden City Park, New Hyde Park and Bethpage.

The residents were on the second floor of the home when the crash occurred.

Inspectors from the Town of North Hempstead building department are inspecting the home to determine if it remains structurally sound, police said.

The car was impounded for a safety check.
