Two men were arrested Saturday on drug and gun possession charges in Island Park after officers stopped their car for a traffic violation, Nassau County police said.
The officers said they saw Jesus Nunez, 25, of Island Park, backing his 2002 Ford unsafely onto Baker Court at 10:09 p.m. Nunez was not wearing a seat belt, his stereo was extremely loud and he had items hanging from his rearview mirror, police said.
Officers pulled Nunez's vehicle over on Railroad Place and found he did not have a valid driver's license. He also had a brown cigarette that appeared to contain marijuana, police said.
His passenger, Jerome Harkless, 21, of Long Beach, pulled a bag of what appeared to be marijuana from his pocket as the officers questioned him, police said.
After Nunez and Harkless were ordered out of the vehicle, police said they found a loaded .45 caliber handgun in the waistband of Harkless' pants.
Both Nunez and Harkless were arrested. Nunez was charged with unsafe backing on a roadway, driver operation of a motor vehicle without seat belt, loud amplification system, obstructed driver's view, unlicensed operation and unlawful possession of marijuana. He is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 15.
Harkless was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said he also had an outstanding warrant in Long Beach for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk.
At his arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday, Harkless was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail or bond. His next court date is Wednesday. Harkless was also ordered held on $500 cash or $250 bond for the Long Beach warrant. He is scheduled to appear in court there on Thursday.
