Hempstead woman charged with attempted murder in stabbing, police say

Nassau County police charged a Hempstead woman with attempted murder related to the stabbing of a customer at a cafe early Sunday morning.

Police said Elsa Marina Saravia-Martinez, 34, of 45 Jackson St. stabbed a 32-year-old man with a kitchen knife at 3:30 a.m. inside the Miranda River Café at 221 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead. Police did not say what provoked the stabbing.

Saravia-Martinez was an employee at the cafe and stabbed the man in the stomach, police said. The man was driven by a friend to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was stable Sunday night.

Police arrested Saravia-Martinez at her home and charged her with second-degree attempted murder charges, first-degree assault and possession of dangerous weapon.

She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in First District Court in Hempstead.
