A Brentwood man was charged Monday with stealing a gold diamond engagement ring from the table of a Wantagh home where he was doing plumbing work in the basement, Nassau County police said.

Enrique Alfaro, 35, of 72 Jewel St., was arrested at Complete Basement Systems, his place of employment.

Detectives from the Seventh Squad recovered the ring -- valued at about $8,000 -- from a pawnshop in Islip, which led to Alfaro's arrest, police said.

Alfaro is charged with grand larceny in the third degree and will be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
