Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes is to attend his final town board meeting today before his retirement next month.

Hudes, 61, is a Levittown Republican who represents the 6th District and owns a jewelry store in Bellmore. He is selling his home and moving out of the district, and wanted to have the summer off.

Hudes was appointed to the town board in July 1999 but lost his seat in the election that November. He was elected the following year. His last day in office is June 5.

The vacancy means the town board can appoint someone — expected to be Nassau County Legis. Dennis Dunne — before the November election. Dunne is running for the seat in the election on the Republican ticket, with incumbent Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, for the 4th District, and Alfred Cittadino, for the 1st District.

Democratic candidate Sue Moller will run against Dunne in November for the 6th District.
