Hempstead pedestrian critical after possible hit-run

A man was seriously injured after police say he was possibly hit by two cars Tuesday night while crossing North Franklin Street in Hempstead.

Hempstead police said a pedestrian was crossing North Franklin Street near Centre Street shortly after 7:30 p.m. and was hit by a car. That driver remained at the scene, said police, who are investigating the possibility that the pedestrian was also struck by a second car that fled the scene.

The man was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where police said he was listed in critical condition.

No criminality was suspected of the first driver, police said. Tuesday night, crime scene investigators were at the scene trying to determine if a second driver was involved.
