A man died after, police said, he was shot and then crashed his vehicle into a house in Hempstead Friday night.

Hempstead police said they responded to a call about an auto accident shortly before 11 p.m. in which the man, whose identity was not released, had crashed his car into a house on Rose Avenue after being shot near Chase Avenue, less than half a mile away.

Shell casings were found near Chase Avenue, and gunfire was detected by ShotSpotter near that area, police said.

Police said the driver also hit a parked car before slamming into the house. He had been shot once in the head, police said, and possibly once more elsewhere on his body.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, where he was pronounced dead at 11:28 p.m., police said.

No one else appeared to be injured, police said early this morning, though the investigation is still in its early stages and is ongoing.

Police had no further information early this morning.

Earlier this week, a man driving in Hempstead Village was fatally wounded by gunfire and crashed into bleachers on a middle school sports field, injuring three boys, authorities said.

Jonathan Wade, 55, a local resident, was shot Tuesday in front of 81 Albemarle Ave., the same area where he had threatened people with a shotgun Monday, Nassau and Hempstead Village police said. No arrests had been made in that case.
