Hempstead to host Kwanzaa festival, with Tuskegee nod

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby will host a Kwanzaa celebration on Dec. 15.

The 15th annual celebration will feature the Rev. Gilbert Pickett Sr. of the Eastern Baptist Association of New York as its keynote speaker and moderator.

Honorees include Frederick K. Brewington, Dr. Mary Cameron, Theresa Sparrow Gill, Carline Dickens, Melissa Dickenson, Galvin Bisserup Jr., and Bishop Barrington Goldson.

There will be special tributes to the late Tuskegee Airman Julius Freeman, who died in July at the age of 89, and Brig. Gen. George A. Jones, who died in September at the age of 93.

The event begins at 4 p.m. at the town’s Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, located at 1 Washington St. in Hempstead. Doors open at 3 p.m. and seating is limited.
