Hempstead Town officials recognize officer who saved woman's life

Hempstead Town officials recognized a town public safety officer on Tuesday for helping save the life of a town employee found unconscious in her car.

Town Supervisor Anthony Santino gave Officer Matthew Gassert a citation and a key to the town during the town board meeting.

Gassert was assisting Hempstead Town Board secretary Elizabeth Muller, 72, who was passed out in her driver’s seat on March 15 and not breathing, Santino said.

Gassert called an ambulance and performed CPR after finding Muller without a pulse. Muller, a town employee since 2002, resumed breathing and regained consciousness at the town parking garage.

“From his time as a lifeguard to his service as a public safety officer, Matthew Gassert has gained valuable lifesaving skills,” Santino said. “We are fortunate that he was on the scene to save the life of a fellow employee.”
