Inwood man charged with false reporting

An Inwood man was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly entered a community center and said he had nuclear bombs that he was going to set off, police said.

Neil Thompson, 33, of 43 Lawrence Ave., Inwood, entered the Five Towns Community Center at 270 Lawrence Ave., approached a man sitting at the front desk, and told him that he had nuclear bombs and was going to blow the place up, police said.

Authorities were notified and about five minutes later, Thompson was seen in the parking lot of 135 Lawrence Ave. smashing a car window and then kicking another vehicle, causing dents on the car. Materials used to make fireworks were found in Thompson's residence and removed. It is not illegal to possess those materials, police said.

Police found Thompson on the second floor of the community center and placed him under arrest at 10:35 a.m. He is being charged with first-degree falsely reporting an incident and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday in First District Court, Hempstead.
