George A. Turner Jr., Jericho fire captain who died in line of duty, to be added to national memorial

A Jericho fire captain who died from a heart attack last year will have his name added to the National Firefighter's Memorial later this month in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

George A. Turner Jr., 60, of Hicksville, died March 8, 2013 after collapsing at a car accident scene on the Long Island Expressway.

Turner will be recognized with five other New York firefighters who died in the line of duty last year during a ceremony Oct. 12 at the National Fire Academy, officials said.

The six New York firefighters are among 98 killed last year nationwide. They will be recognized by the National Firefighters Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Fire Administration.

Turner became a volunteer firefighter on his 18th birthday when he joined the Locust Valley Fire Department with his father and two uncles, officials said.

He later served with the Glen Cove and Glenwood Landing fire departments for a decade into the mid-1980s. He joined the Jericho department in 2005.

"George loved the fire department and serving his community. No matter when the whistle blew, he responded to help those who needed it," the National Firefighters Foundation website states.
