Police: Man charged in theft of safe from New Cassel home

A New Cassel man has been arrested for allegedly removing a safe containing cash from a hamlet residence last month.

Joshua Johnson, 19, of 212 Urban Ave., was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Friday and charged with burglary, violation of probation and criminal possession of marijuana. He was scheduled for arraignment Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.

According to police, Johnson was seen removing the safe, which contained an undetermined amount of cash, from a Maplewood Drive home at about 10 p.m. June 18.

Police said Johnson was found on Friday on nearby Bond Street by detectives. When approached, the suspect fled on foot northbound, but he was tracked by dogs from the canine unit and found hiding under a vehicle on Juniper Lane.

No further details were immediately available.
