HAUPPAUGE/Car hits, kills pedestrian

A Hauppauge man was struck by a car and killed as he attempted to cross the Long Island Expressway service road in Hauppauge, police said.

Robert Denise, 56, of Dorado Circle, was struck by a 2006 Honda Accord being driven by Thomas Martino, 26, of East Northport, westbound on Express Drive North near MacArthur Boulevard at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Suffolk County police said.

Denise died at the scene. Police said Martino was not injured. No charges were filed. The car was impounded for a safety check and the investigation in continuing.

HEMPSTEAD/Arrest in pair's stabbing

A Hempstead man has been arrested on assault charges after stabbing two men outside his apartment, Nassau County police said.

Angel Ortiz, 28, of 17 Saint Pauls Rd., confronted two men outside his apartment at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. He allegedly stabbed one victim in the back and in the wrist, police said. One of the stabbing victims went back to his residence, where he was found bleeding in a bedroom. The other went to a relative's apartment.

Both were taken to a hospital and admitted, police said. No other information on their conditions was available, police said.

Ortiz is charged with assault and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, police said. He was scheduled to be arraigned yesterday at First District Court in Hempstead.

FREEPORT/Thieves stab bicyclist

First Squad detectives are looking for a group of men who attacked a Freeport bicyclist, stealing his bike and stabbing him, Nassau County police said.

Detectives said a 20-year-old man was riding his bike near 111 W. Merrick Rd. at about 4:40 a.m. Sunday when a group of 10 to 15 men between 16 and 18 stopped him, pushed and shoved him, and demanded he give up the bike.

The bicyclist told police he felt a sharp pain in his back and released the bike. The group fled with it in an unknown direction, police said.

When the victim went home, he discovered he had been stabbed in the back. He was taken to a hospital by a family member. Police said he was in stable condition with three stab wounds. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers, 800-244-8477. Callers will remain anonymous.
