A homeless man was crossing the railroad tracks with friends in Freeport when he collapsed Wednesday and never regained consciousness, MTA officials said.
Yoni Marcos, 35, was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was pronounced dead, said Salvatore Arena, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Marcos and his friends had finished playing soccer in a park between the LIRR's Freeport train station and the Meadowbrook State Parkway, and were trying to reach Sunrise Highway when he may have suffered cardiac arrest, Arena said.
The engineer of a westbound Long Island Rail Road train spotted the man about 2:30 p.m. and alerted authorities, MTA officials said.
An MTA police source said Marcos appeared to have been drinking, as were his friends, who were also "highly intoxicated."
Some trains were delayed.
