A man hit by a Long Island Rail Road train as it was entering the Baldwin station has died, a spokesman for the commuter service said Thursday.
The man, in his 50s, died at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, said Sam Zambuto, a spokesman for the railroad. He was unsure exactly when the man died, but said that Metropolitan Transportation Authority police were investigating the death. The victim was not identified.
"MTA police are investigating how and why he was on the track," Zambuto said.
The man was struck Wednesday by the 7:08 p.m. train from Penn Station that was due at the Babylon station at 8:20 p.m. That train was canceled after striking the victim at 7:55 p.m., and all train service on that line was stopped in both directions for about an hour, Zambuto said.
About 1,300 people were on the train.
