LIRR train hits pedestrian in Island Park

A westbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and injured a pedestrian Friday afternoon at the Long Beach Road crossing in Island Park, an LIRR spokesman said.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, according to Salvatore Arena of the railroad.

The 4:45 p.m. accident, involving the 4:29 p.m. westbound train, also stopped eastbound trains for about 30 minutes, Arena said, and caused residual eastbound delays of about 30 minutes.

The following westbound train, the 6:05 p.m., was canceled, Arena said, and passengers were to be accommodated on the next train at 6:38 p.m.

The cause of the accident, under investigation by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police, was not immediately known, but the crossing gates at that location were operating properly, Arena said.
