Mall developer buys 22 acres in East Garden City

Equity One, a Florida-based developer, operator and owner of shopping malls, has purchased the former world headquarters of Avis Rent a Car, a 22-acre property next to Westbury Plaza in East Garden City.

Equity One announced the purchase from Simon Property Group of Indianapolis in a deal closed Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.

Equity One purchased Westbury Plaza, a 400,000-square-foot shopping center anchored by Walmart and Costco, in October for $103.7 million.

Combined with the Plaza property, Wednesday's purchase creates Equity One's largest asset, the company said.

Equity One chief executive Jeff Olson was not specific about plans for the site but did say that "nearly a dozen retailers have an interest in entering the market for the first time or relocating an existing store to our site.
