Man and juvenile charged with gang assault and robbery, cops

A Cedarhurst man and a juvenile were arrested Monday in connection with a March 26 robbery and gang assault in Roosevelt, Nassau County police said.

Police said the alleged attacked happened when Artawon Wright, 18, and three other men approached a 48-year-old man who was standing in a driveway at a residence on Mirin Avenue. Wright started kicking the man until he fell to the ground while two other men -- who have not yet been arrested -- hit the man with a baseball bat and golf club, police said.

The juvenile took the man's wallet from his back pants pocket, before all four then fled in a dark-colored SUV, according to police. The four had also broken windows of the home and of a Plymouth Voyager, police said. The man who was hit and kicked was treated for his injuries at an area hospital, police said.

Both Wright and the juvenile were arrested Monday.

Wright -- charged with two counts of first degree robbery, first degree gang assault, and second and third degree criminal mischief -- was arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead and remanded to Nassau County Correctional Center on $10,000 bail or $10,000 bond. His next court date is May 10. The juvenile was to appear Tuesday for the same charges in Nassau County Family Court.
