A man has been arrested and charged with wounding another man after opening fire on a crowd in a nightclub parking lot in Hempstead Friday, police said.
Also arrested was a man who tried to thwart Hempstead Village police officers from arresting the suspected shooter, police said.
The 35-year-old victim, struck in the right calf, has been treated and released from a hospital, police said.
The shooting happened about 4:23 a.m. after a fight outside Club Nakasaki on Fulton Avenue.
Police say the suspected shooter, Shemoi Edwards, 20, of 1118 Braxton St., Uniondale, opened fire, and later Kevin Hewitt, 23, of 144 Patterson Ave., Hempstead, put himself between arresting police and Edwards.
Edwards Edwards was charged with criminal weapons possession, criminal use of a firearm, assault and reckless endangerment; Hewitt was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, police said.
Both are expected to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Police did not say what prompted the initial fight, with whom Edwards was fighting, how they concluded Edwards was the shooter, or the relationship between Edwards and Hewitt.
