An Amityville man has been arrested in a June sexual assault that took place in Hempstead, police said Friday.
Tommy Williams Berry, 42, of 15 N. Emerald , was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree assault and first-degree criminal sexual act in the attack, which took place about 3 a.m. June 28, police said.
Nassau County Police said Berry sexually assaulted a woman walking westbound on Fulton Avenue after leaving a bar. Police said Berry approached the woman, forced her into an alley, struck her in the face, fracturing her left cheekbone, and then sexually assaulted her.
The victim fled and was helped by a passerby, and then was treated at Nassau University Medical Center. Police said Berry climbed a fence and fled on Meadowbrook Road.
Police did not say what led them to Berry. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
