A man who police said barricaded himself in his ex-girlfriend's Westbury home with their 13-year-old son before surrendering hours later was arraigned Monday on charges related to the standoff.
Alex Mitchell, 48, of Barbados, was charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child after the Sunday incident, authorities said.
Following a standoff that lasted more than five hours, Mitchell let his son leave the home and surrendered at 5:45 p.m., police said.
Monday, Mitchell's bail was set at $120,000 at his arraignment at Nassau County Court in Mineola. He was being held at Nassau County jail. If convicted, Mitchell could face a maximum of 15 years in prison, officials said.
Police said he also was found to have an open Family Court warrant and a First District Court warrant against him. It was not clear what those charges involved.
The incident began late Sunday morning.
Police said Mitchell had taken the boy out for the day Saturday as part of a custody agreement. Later, police said he illegally entered his ex-girlfriend's home on Park Street by breaking a basement window and got into an argument with her. When Mitchell attempted to leave the home with the couple's son, police said, the boy's mother called police.
Then, police said, Mitchell "barricaded himself and the child in the home." Bureau of Special Operations officers, Emergency Services Unit officers and hostage negotiations officers responded to the scene.
No weapon was recovered.
