Man charged in theft of his dad's identity

A Port Washington man was charged with opening credit cards in the name of an 86-year-old Massapequa man with dementia - his own father, police said.

On Oct. 14, Earl Grenfell, 50, of Fairfield Avenue, used his father's personal identification to open three credit card accounts for his personal benefit, police said.

Grenfell's father's caretaker noticed irregularities in the man's credit reports and notified police, authorities said. It was not clear if any charges were made to the credit cards.

Grenfell was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of identity theft. He was scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 5 at First District Court in Hempstead.
