Robber flees in stolen car in East Rockaway, police say

A man who fled after he was seen shoplifting in a East Rockaway CVS Wednesday afternoon then drove off with a car he stole from a woman getting into the vehicle, Nassau police said.

According to Fourth Squad detectives, the man was in the CVS at 488 Ocean Ave. when he was observed shoplifting merchandise. After he left the store, the manager and another employee chased him westbound on Prospect Avenue, then struggled with him before recovering the merchandise, police said.

The suspect kept going on Prospect Avenue, then confronted a woman about to enter her running car, pushing her out of the way and jumping into the vehicle, police said.

Other witnesses ran to help her, trying to pull the man from the car, but he put the car into reverse, struck a parked vehicle behind him and then drove across the victim's lawn, police said.

He was seen going east in the woman's gray 2010 Toyota Corolla and was still at large, police said at 11:15 p.m.

The suspect was described as being about 6 feet tall with an average build, brown hair and eyeglasses, a blue windbreaker and blue jeans.

There were no reported injuries.

Police said anyone with information could call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
