A Freeport man walking to retrieve his car parked across Sunrise Highway Friday night was struck and killed by a car, police said.

Around 6 p.m., Marion D. Carter Jr., 61, of Prince Avenue was walking north across the highway at Oakland Avenue in Wantagh when he was hit by a 2003 Toyota traveling east, police said.

The Toyota's driver, a 28-year-old man from Freeport, remained at the scene until he was transported to an area hospital to be treated for chest pains and head and facial lacerations, police said.

No criminality was suspected.

Carter was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:15 p.m.

Carter's wife Linda said her husband was going to retrieve his car, parked across the highway from the Subaru dealership where he worked.

"He was a wonderful father and son, husband and brother," she said. "To me those were his main roles. And he was a friend to all. He will be missed tremendously."

In addition to his wife, Carter is survived by his mother Elisa, 82, of Queens, daughters Lauren, 24, and Ashley, 21, his sister Elisa Palmer, 59, of Hempstead, and brother Michael, 56, of Hempstead.

Funeral arrangements were pending at Hungerford & Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Freeport.
