A man was shot dead Monday night in New Cassel, Nassau County police said.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in front of a business at 994 Prospect Ave., where they found a 31-year-old man with "multiple gunshot wounds," a police news release said.

The man, who was not identified, was taken by ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead at 6:42 p.m., police said.

Nassau police did not have additional details Monday night and had not determined a motive for the shooting.

An employee at Mr. Chen's Chinese Food on Prospect Avenue, a few doors from the shooting, said she saw a man sitting on a black bench when he was approached by four youths.

She said she heard two shots fired and saw the teens run away around the corner by a deli.

She said police officers told her to remain inside the business and await a detective who would come by later for questioning.

"I heard two gunshots outside and the next thing I know, I saw him lying on the ground," the employee said. "It all happened so fast."

Police have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects.

Authorities said anyone with information could call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
