Nassau police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Saturday afternoon outside an East Meadow synagogue.
Passersby reported at 3:44 p.m. that a man was "walking and stumbling" south on Merrick Avenue, according to Insp. Kenneth Lack.
Police found the man lying by the side of Temple Emanu-El, 123 Merrick Ave., on a strip of lawn, Lack said.
He was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, Lack said. The cause of death wasn't immediately known.
There were no "obvious signs of trauma," Lack said.
Homicide detectives were still at the scene Saturday night. The body had not yet been removed.
The victim was identified only as an adult black man. He did not appear to have any connection with the temple, Lack said.
Michael Salomon, temple president, said services were held Saturday morning as usual but the building was empty when police arrived.
