An Elmont man left his 8-year-old home alone and drove drunk and high when he was pulled over early yesterday, Nassau police said.

Ruben Saravia, 36, of 1341 O St., is charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

Saravia was driving a 2011 BMW on North Franklin Street, near Centre Street, in Hempstead shortly before 3:45 a.m., police said.

He had an "inoperative rear taillight," so a traffic stop was made and officers observed that Saravia had "bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage" on his breath, according to a news release.

Officers also found six white pills -- believed to be hydrocodone -- inside his car, the release said.

Police also found that Saravia's child was home alone; they went to his home and released the child to a family friend, the news release said.

Police Monday declined to reveal the child's gender "to protect the child," a department spokesman said.

Saravia, who also faces traffic violations, was arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead, where bail was set at $3,500 cash or bond. Bail had not been posted into the evening.
