An Asplundh employee working as a subcontractor for PSEG Long Island was arrested Thursday after he submitted a false inventory request for more than $4,800 worth of copper wire then sold it as scrap, police said.

Michael Jayne, 31, of 11 Sycamore Ave., Glen Head, was arrested at the PSEG yard in Hicksville and charged with third-degree grand larceny, Nassau County police said.

He was arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead and held on a $1,000 bail.

Police said that at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jayne submitted the false materials request to a warehouse supervisor at the Hicksville yard -- asking for 300 feet of copper wire valued at $4,874. Jayne then took that wire to a scrap yard where he sold it, police said.

It was not immediately clear how much money Jayne received for the wire.
