N. Massapequa streets reopen after standoff report found false

A nearly six-hour standoff sparked by fears that a gunman had barricaded himself in a North Massapequa home ended when the 73-year-old woman inside finally let cops see she was safe and alone, Nassau County police said.

A police hostage-negotiation team spent Saturday evening investigating whether there a man was barricaded inside the North Wyoming Avenue home, said police spokeswoman Officer Adele Burke.

"She would not come out," Burke said.

The report turned out to be false, police said. The initial call came in at about 4:20 p.m., Burke said.

During the crisis, the area between North Central Drive, North Idaho Avenue, North Wyoming Avenue and North Woodward Drive was cordoned off.

The streets were reopened Saturday night.
