Nassau prosecutors have started to present evidence to a grand jury in the case of a Queens teen accused of two Valley Stream sexual assaults, a judge said Wednesday.

Nashane A. Peterkin, 16, who was charged as an adult with first-degree rape and second-degree sexual assault and strangulation in the Sept. 1 rape and Aug. 12 sexual assault, did not appear at the brief hearing in Nassau County Court in Mineola. He was ordered held without bond at his arraignment Monday. Judge Angelo A. Delligatti said the district attorney's office had "commenced a presentation of this matter to the grand jury" and set a court date for Oct. 1. But the judge said if the grand jury takes "action" on the case, it could be back to court sooner.

Peterkin was represented at the hearing by Forest Hills private attorney Michael Dreishpoon. The lawyer waived his client's appearance in court. Dreishpoon said after the hearing Peterkin is "innocent until proven guilty" but declined to comment further. Peterkin's father attended the hearing and also declined to comment.
