Police are searching for the driver of a white Toyota Camry who investigators said struck and seriously injured a man crossing a street in New Hyde Park on Monday, then fled the scene.

The vehicle is believed to be a 1997 to 1999 Camry, according to Nassau County police investigators. It was not immediately clear Tuesday how police determined the make and model of the vehicle.

Police said the car was involved in the hit-and-run on Hillside Avenue, just east of Lakeville Road, at 9:54 p.m.

The victim, identified only as a 62-year-old man, had exited a bus on Hillside Avenue and was attempting to cross the busy street when he was struck by the car, which was headed east. The victim suffered what police described as "multiple trauma injuries" -- and was transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not known Tuesday.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
