Nassau Legislature to post meeting transcripts going forward

Legis. Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow), presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature, said she has instructed the clerk's office to begin posting transcripts and video recordings of future legislative meetings.

The move came after Newsday reported last week that Henry Boitel, president of the Rockville Centre Democratic Club, obtained transcripts of legislative meetings from 2012, 2013 and the first two months of 2014 and posted them on the group's website. Boitel's plan was to create an archived record of meetings of the 19-member legislature dating to its first meeting in 1996.

Legislative Democrats had introduced legislation to require the county to post on its website transcripts and video recordings of future legislative meetings after learning of Boitel's initiative.

Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport) called it "the responsibility of government to make this information accessible."

Gonsalves' initiative also calls for posting some archived documents, a spokeswoman says.
