A man who robbed a TD Bank branch on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow no doubt got an unexpected surprise Sunday when a dye pack placed in the money bag exploded as he fled the bank, Nassau County police said.
The robbery occurred at 3:50 p.m. at the bank branch at 2549 Hempstead Tpke.
Six patrons and six employees were in the bank at the time of the robbery, but no one was injured, according to police.
Police said the robber, described as being in his early 20s, somewhere between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10 with blonde hair, was wearing a blue baseball cap with a white insignia, black gloves, dark sunglasses, a tan jacket, blue jeans and brown work boots.
He entered the bank, waited on line, handed the teller a demand note and was handed cash, which included the dye pack. It activated as the robber left the bank, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding this robbery to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
